Kamøyvær

Kamøyvær is a picturesque fishing village on the island of Magerøya. It is around 12 m from the
islands main town of Honningsvåg. Kamøyvær is situated on the edge of Kamøyfjord just of the main road from Honningsvåg to Northcape. The first record of settlers here dates back to the 19th century. Today its population is around 130 people.

Life has changed in those years since the first settlers. In the 19th century the population was made
up of 3 different cultures. Fishermen from the arctic coasts came to settle with their families along
with Sámi innovates and from the large forests of Finland. If you stood at the harbour then 3 different languages were spoken. After time the Norwegians dominated the population, and that’s the same
today with 97% Norwegian living in the village. The other 3% made up of German, British and
American who have made their home in Kamøyvær.

All year fishing and tourism in the summer is the largest source of income for many villagers today. Kamøyvær is a perfect base for deep sea fishing laying on the edge of Kamøyfjord, one of Europe’s most fish populated sea. The beautiful nature and the islands colony’s of birds is perfect to explore
on a nice day.
